Caster Wheel Diameter Selector

Suggest a practical wheel diameter from the floor condition, the per-wheel load, and the obstacles the cart must roll over, using the trade-off that bigger wheels roll easier but raise the deck.

Wheel diameter is the trade-off every cart design starts with: a bigger wheel rolls over debris and thresholds more easily but lifts the deck and needs a stronger bracket. Enter the per-wheel load, the floor condition, the obstacles, and the deck height the equipment can accept, and the calculator returns a diameter range with the reason.

Diameter alone does not create capacity, so the returned size still has to be checked against the catalogue rating for that diameter. Twin-wheel casters change both the effective diameter and the capacity, which this tool does not model.

Inputs

Obstacle, load, and deck limit

Range: 0–4 in

Threshold, floor joint, dock plate lip, or curb. Use 0 for a smooth floor.

Range: 10–40,000 lb

Range: 2–36 in

Overall height you can tolerate, which caps the wheel diameter.

Suggested wheel diameter (in)

Fit check
Use the suggested diameter; it clears the obstacle, carries the load, and stays within the deck height.

What to check

  • Check the diameter against the catalogue load rating for that size.
  • Confirm the deck height is acceptable in the installed condition.
  • Treat the result as a starting point and confirm the part with the supplier.

A starting point for a conversation with a supplier, not a specification. Wheel diameter alone does not determine capacity, so the per-wheel load must still be checked against the catalogue rating for the diameter chosen. Twin-wheel casters, which change both the effective diameter and the load capacity, are not considered.
