Caster Bearing Selector

Choose between a plain bore, a roller bearing, a sealed precision ball bearing, and a high-temperature option from the load, the wheel speed, the environment, and how easily the caster must roll.

Bearing choice sets how easily a caster rolls, how much load it carries, and how long it survives the environment. Enter the wheel diameter, the travel speed, the load per wheel, the floor and environment, and whether rolling ease is the priority, and the calculator returns a bearing recommendation with the reason.

The bands are selection aids, not ratings: a specific bearing’s published dynamic load rating and speed rating always outrank the advice. Where a service life is required, the bearing life tool is the next step.

Inputs

Load, wheel, and speed

Range: 10–40,000 lbf

Range: 1–20 in

A larger wheel turns fewer revolutions for the same distance, which is easier on the bearing.

Range: 0–12 mph

Walking pace is about 3 mph. Towed trains and powered carts run faster and load the bearing harder.

Recommended bearing
Roller bearing is the safe default at this load and speed. A precision ball bearing will roll easier, and a plain bore is only defensible at low load and low speed.
Speed note
The wheel speed is within the range where bearing heat is not the governing problem.

What to check

  • Convert the speed to wheel rpm for the actual wheel diameter before comparing speed ratings.
  • Confirm the axle diameter and hub bore can take the recommended bearing.
  • Check the recommendation against the bearing maker's load and speed ratings before ordering.

Bands are selection aids, not manufacturer ratings, and a specific bearing's dynamic load rating and speed rating always outrank this advice. The tool does not model bearing life, does not consider axle diameter or hub bore, and ignores price beyond the rolling-priority question.
